About the Job Shadow Program

What is Job Shadowing?

The Woodstock Academy Job Shadow program is designed to offer students the opportunity to learn about an occupation in which they have expressed interest.  It allows students to spend time in a business observing a person in that occupation.  This one-on-one interaction allows students to learn first hand about the work activities, education needed, and the skills required to perform the job.

What is the objective of Job Shadowing?

The purpose is to provide an opportunity for students to explore a chosen career by following an experienced worker in their field of interest.  Employers should provide general information about their jobs and the skills needed, as well as educational and training requirements.

What happens during a Job Shadow?

During a job shadow, host employers are encouraged to perform their normal work activities, talk to students about their work, its significance in the organization, and the skills and knowledge required to perform the job.  Students observe and are encouraged to ask appropriate questions of their hosts.

What are the benefits with involvement in Job Shadows?

  • Students make informed choices regarding educational and career goals.
  • Students prepare to become skilled, productive, responsible citizens.
  • Employers help students connect their education to the business world.
  • A partnership is build between educators, employers, students, parents and the community.

What are the student expectations for a Job Shadow?

  • Research the desired career.
  • Fill out the Job Shadow Request Form.
  • Meet with your school counselor and Mr. Walley to prepare for the job shadow.
  • Call the employer to confirm the job shadow date and time.
  • Complete the required Permission Form.
  • Complete the Confidentiality Agreement.
  • Arrange transportation to and from the job shadow.
  • Dress appropriately.
  • Arrive on time.
  • Display courteous behavior at all times.
  • Follow the rules of the work place.
  • Ask relevant questions of host employer.
  • Thank employer and send thank you letter.
  • Provide employer with evaluation form.

Cancellation Policy

You should make every effort to attend your scheduled job shadow! If you must cancel: call within 24 hours of the scheduled appointment to reschedule; notify your school counselor or Mr. Walley.  If you cancel without notification you may lose future job shadowing privileges.

Career Resources

Video and print materials from colleges are available, as are resources for help in writing a resume, cover letter, and application for a job. Students may use the computer software to complete career inventories as part of their personal career portfolio. Workshops are offered periodically to help students in the job search process. Career Center staff are available for assistance as needed.
